Things To Do Over Spring Break

Every student highly anticipates getting those long breaks, sprinkled throughout the months, as it serves as a relaxing getaway from the stress and challenges of school. While many love to go on a nice trip to visit family or explore a new place, Coronavirus and its new variants have discouraged traveling for almost the third year. Regardless of this unfavorable fact, many other extremely entertaining and leisurely activities can make your spring break super invigorating. Don’t worry, having breaks from school is such a gift in itself, and being grateful for this is so important, as we can take advantage of the things we can do and get done. With that being said, here are some awesome ways to spend your spring break if you decide not to travel this year:

  1. Spring Cleaning: Although I am starting with the slightly boring one, it’s truly the most effective. Use a couple of days in your break to declutter and make your space fresh and brand new again. Dust off your fans, clean out your closets and set aside the clothes you don’t need or wear anymore, organize your jewelry/accessories, or do some room redecorating! The motivation to actually start will surely be challenging, but once you do bring yourself to begin, you’ll find yourself not being able to stop until you’ve done it all; and trust me, the feeling of satisfaction that follows is one of the best things you can feel. Even if you sit around on Netflix or Tiktok for most of your days during the break, doing and completing your spring cleaning will make you feel at least a little productive!

  2. Relax with a “Treat Yourself Day”: With all the stresses of school, you deserve a full day dedicated to treating yourself and working on bettering your mental, physical, and emotional health. Go to the spa, get a manicure or get your nails done, take a relaxing nap, do something you enjoy (reading, knitting, singing, playing an instrument, playing a sport, listening to music), indulge in your favorite snacks and food, and try to cut down on phone time. We all deserve to be a little selfish sometimes if it means bettering our mental health. Stay away from the trap of social media and live in the moment by dedicating that whole day to yourself. It’ll make you appreciate life a little more!

  3. Take a Walk and Exercise: If you feel lazy or unmotivated to go work out, taking a walk is an amazing and effective alternative to getting your exercise in. Find a beautiful little park or path somewhere—either by yourself, with family, or with friends—and enjoy nature and the scenery. Take in your surroundings and enjoy that walk to the fullest!

  4. Have a Picnic: Spring weather calls for a fun picnic! Grab a group of friends, or some close family members, or even go by yourself and enjoy a small picnic with delicious food outdoors. Make sure to bring a book or something fun to occupy yourself with too!

  5. Practice those cooking and baking skills: If you love food, wouldn’t it be a great idea to try to learn how to make the foods you love? Not only will you feel super accomplished and productive, but you will now be able to make the foods you enjoy whenever you feel like it. Learning cooking and baking skills only has its benefits, and what better time to practice than if you’re just staying at home and relaxing?

  6. Try to take a “daycation”: While traveling far and outside of the country may not be something that you do this spring break, going on a fun day trip to somewhere local would make you feel like you’re doing something pretty exciting! We all live extremely close to NYC too, so taking a few friends or family members and driving or taking a bus to the city to spend the day there could be quite engaging! Discover a new restaurant or dessert shop, walk around and enjoy the scenery, visit a zoo, or watch a movie; the list could go on and on for a fun day trip!

  7. Buy Different Clothes: Nothing’s more fun than browsing and buying new clothes for yourself, and with the time you have over break, you could experiment by shopping for some clothes outside of your comfort zone and usual style. Experimenting with different pieces of clothing could lead to you having a new style that you can go to school with after break. Visit a local thrift store too, and find some hidden gems to add to your collection!

  8. Give back to the community: Gather a group of people and help clean up your local community by picking up trash around town, or do some community service by helping your parents or neighbors with mowing their lawn or anything else they may need help with, donate to charity, or participate in a local food drive. Anything that allows you to give back to the community will be greatly appreciated, as a little goes a long way!

  9. Go stargazing: Spend a cool night with some family and friends by setting up a blanket in your backyard and relaxing on it, looking up at the stars. Take in the beauty of the night sky to your fullest ability, as this is something many of us don’t do enough. Try researching some common star shapes too, so when you’re stargazing, you could connect some of the stars to identify the shapes you’re looking at.

  10. Do some planning ahead: As a high school student, it may be a strategic and good idea to start seriously thinking about your plans once you leave high school. Start thinking about the colleges you may want to apply to, how close or far you want to be from home, what majors may interest you, what kind of career path suits your interests best, and what end goals you plan to pursue and achieve. While these topics are something many try putting off until the late senior year, thinking ahead would relieve you of excessive stress, especially since you also have to worry about school work and maintaining your grades. With the free time you may come across over spring break, planning out your future and your goals (or at least trying to), can truly go such a long way, and you will constantly thank yourself when you’re not confused or stressed about what to do after high school as your time here quickly comes to an abrupt end.

These are just a few of the many things you can choose to do over your spring break, especially if you won’t be traveling and will be bored with the free time you have. The main goal is to simply enjoy yourself and make sure you make the best of your Spring Break!
