What Lights a Fire in Me

I've always viewed journalism as a way for one to ignite the paper with the flame of their pen, allowing their thoughts and beliefs to spread enough to catch fire to the minds of an audience or those around them. In other words, through journalism, one can benefit others by simply keeping them educated, informed, and actively opinionated. Ever since I learned about journalism with all its aspects and what it entails, I've been immensely fascinated by it and it has taken a tight grasp on the things I love to do. As I ventured further through my high school journey, I noticed that most of the activities I've done so far consist of journalism-related things—and continue to do so. This profession and its whole process have growingly captured my attention and I simply believe I could not exist without it.

I will be enabled to move and work closer toward my dream of being a journalist—having the ability to help others by informing them. In full truth, I plan on double majoring in journalism and legal studies/political science, as both spark massive interests in me and I've held a great love for both areas for the longest time. I know that either path will allow me to help others and have an impact on the world around me—which is one of my baseline goals in life. Serving my personal community, as well as the other beautiful communities in need around me or currently out of my immediate reach, is something I aspire to successfully carry out. For me, there is notable honor and satisfaction in providing others with education and information. This workshop will only propel me forward to fulfill my calling.

This is an excerpt from one of the written pieces that got me into New York University’s 2022 Urban Journalism Workshop.
